Who is South Bay Pontoons?
Forest River Inc., an established and well-known recreational vehicle company, expanded their recreational product offerings to include luxury pontoons in 1998. South Bay initially introduced a successful line of pontoons that quickly became known for luxury, performance and quality. Their products were recognized by numerous awards that included Pontoon & Deck Boat Magazine “Best Of” and “Best Boat” by Boating Life Magazine. In 2005, Forest River and South Bay were acquired by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. and became part of the successful and well-known brand names guided by Warren Buffet. South Bay recently won the 2009 CSI award for pontoon manufacturers, which is why it’s been said “a pontoon is just a pontoon unless you’re on the water in a South Bay Pontoon.”
South Bay Pontoons Timeline
Since 1998 we have built a successful foundation for South Bay Pontoons based on performance, luxury, and quality. This timeline shows the many milestones and achievements during our quest to be the best.
- January 1998: Parent company Forest River Inc., one of the largest recreational products manufacturers in North America establishes the marine division.
- May 2000: Pontoon & Deck Boat Magazine presents Forest River Marine with a “Best of Award”, the first of many.
- August 2000: Forest River Marine sets the first of many pontoon speed records with an 80.8 mph run in Elkhart, Indiana.
- April 2002: Forest River Marine breaks ground on a new 100,000 square foot facility with room for expansion on 50 acres.
- July 2003: Industry veteran, Tom McCuddy, joins Forest River Inc. and compiles a team of experienced marine veterans comprised of Greg Bender, Guy Vidmar, and Dick Marquis. This group is charged with growing South Bay into a leading innovator in pontoons with the best quality control and customer service.
- August 2005: Forest River Inc. is acquired by Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway company, allowing South Bay Pontoons to join such venerable brand names as Geico, Dairy Queen, The Pampered Chef, See’s Candies, Fruit of the Loom, Justin Brand Boots, Benjamin Moore & Co., Net Jets, & Helzberg Diamonds. www.berkshirehathaway.com
- May 2006: Boating Life names the new 900 series “Best Breakout Boat” of 2006. The flagship model, 925CR Trifecta, becomes the most popular performance pontoon offered by South Bay Pontoons. Additionally, South Bay Pontoons doubled the production volume of Inboard/Outboard powered Trifecta boats in response to customer demand during the 2006 model year.
- June 2007: South Bay Pontoons forms their Specialty Products Division in response to customer requests for 10’ wide units, saltwater intercoastal, and personalized custom built units.
- 2008 and beyond: South Bay Pontoons will remain committed to continual product improvement as a means to provide the South Bay owner with a lifetime of enjoyment on the water.
South Bay Pontoon Product Line
The 2010 South Bay Pontoons will include three product categories:
- The 900 Series is standard with the Trifecta triple pontoon configuration and are available with a V8 inboard/outboard engine or a high-performance outboard. Each model is outfitted to be the ultimate in a luxury pontoon, including soft touch vinyl, berber carpet and king-size helm seat with recliner and lumbar support.
The 700 Series starts with a long list of standard items and expands into versatile cruise pontoon configurations. Everyone from the Captain to friends and family will enjoy spending time on the lake. The highlight of the 700 Series is the 24’ 724SL, which is setup with twin rear-facing lounge seats that are great for watching water sports or just enjoying the scenery. The front seating includes wrap-around loungers. You’ll also find a lounger adjacent from the helm seat.
The 500 Series includes cruise and fish pontoons that offer amenities specific to the model design. Each model has been carefully thoughtout to deliver the functionality pontoon owners look for, along with a satisfying price. The cruise models have plenty of seating and storage for a day on the lake. The fish models offer basic fishing options all the way to a four-corner fishing machine with massive livewell, tackle holder and bait prep station.
